Getting Away With Something...

I can get way with anything and everything. I'm an only child and I taught myself to be sneaky and blame everyone else. One time, I remember playing tag with my friend and her 2 sisters when I was 5. We were running around the back yard and I was trying to catch Kathrine. I remember running so close behind her almost got her, when she tripped. I then stopped behind her and slapped her on the back. I slapped her back so loud, that my mom and her mom on the front porch heard the noise. Luckily, it was behind a tree so they didn't see me. When my mom called me over to ask if I had been the one that hit her, I said no, it was her sister, Mollie. Sisters hitting sisters was pretty common in that family and with all of them being under the age of 10, it made sense. Mollie was the oldest and myself and her had a special relationship in a way (still do), so she took the blame for it. She didn't want me getting in trouble and I let her take the blame. I was kind happy that she took the blame because i was also scared of getting in trouble

Gender equality is a huge issue in our modern society. From happening on TV to even in our own home. It all starts off with being exposed to gender equality and stereotypes from a very young age and we don't even know it. For example, Disney. We all know that the Disney princesses are tall, long flowing hair, unrealistic body proportions, big eyes and perfect skin. Even though they are just animated characters, they still have an affect on young girls making them think that's what they need to look like in order to get a guy or to have a fairy tale life. For the princes in the Disney story's, they are tall, have mussels that are unrealistically big, defined bone structure and very handsome. You always see them trying to get the girl by fighting off dragons, or climbing to the highest room in the tallest tower of the castle. No one looks like these characters or acts like them.
For me, when I'm older and done high school, I want to be a makeup artist. And this kind of profession can be very sexist at time. Most of the time, it's women that are wearing the makeup and doing it, but when you see a guy doing makeup or even wearing it, society just makes these assumptions that they're gay. This isn't always true. This doesn't affect what I want to do in the future, but it may affect some other people's choices.
My family is like any other family. A mom, a dad, and me. For us, gender equality isn't a huge issue in out house. All of us take turns doing the laundry, cleaning, and doing other jobs around the house. We do have a small family, and we all need to help out around the house. Doing this has given me the chance to create good relationships with my parents.
The roles of gender in our society, in my opinion are not fair. For example, the women in movies are often times portrayed as the innocent ones who are so beautiful and get the guy at the end of the story. This kind of thing doesn't happen in real life. Movies try and make women seem flawless with perfect lives. This is why so many people have huge expectations in life instead of making goals to achive these lives. Fot the men, their tall, handsome and get the girl at the end of the story. Like women, this doesn't happen. Maybe some people have lives like these, but this type situation doesn't always exist. I can't remember the last time I saw a movie where the man had the women's roles and the women had the men's role. Things need to change.

Hey Guys!

Hi! My name is Olivia, but everyone calls me Liv and I like it that way. I want to use this post to tell you a few things about myself, so here we go!
Firstly, I was born in Dundee, Scotland. It's a small city about the size of Kitchener and it's located on the east coast of Scotland, on the River Tay. It is a beautiful country, but Canada will always be my home no matter what. I moved here when I was four going on five years old, so in August it will be my tenth year here.
Now, for all my favorites! My absolute favorite British-Irish boy-band is.... you guessed it! One Direction! I've loved them for over a year now, and they are the best! Their music is something that no other boy-band has sung about before, which makes them extra unique. Their style and the way they present themselves is flawless.
Thirdly, for movies and books. The best movie and book franchise of all time is the Harry Potter series in my opinion. Just the way J.K. Rowling writes captivates you, and the books are defiantly a page turner. The books were so powerful that it started to make me believe in magic! Crazy right?! I could read and watch that series over and over again without getting bored.
They say a dog is a man's best friend (I'm a girl, but you know what I mean), and I couldn't get enough of my dog Sadie! She's only five, but her mental age is two. She is cross between a poodle and golden retriever, which makes her a golden doodle. She's a very hyper dog, who loves being taken for big walks everyday and she loves her pink cat stuffed animal. My family hopes to get her a brother or sister in the fall.
And lastly, my future goals. When I was younger, I wanted to be a pilot, and for quite a long time. But now that I've gotten older, and I know more about the world, I've developed an interest in Physiology and Sociology. In simpler form, the study of the human mind and why society is the way it is. It intrigues me to find out why a person is doing the things that they do, or why a lot of developing countries have poor to no woman's rights. But, there is something else that has caught my interest over the past year that is very different from the human mind, and that is makeup. I've started wearing makeup and playing around with it. It amazes me how makeup can change your whole appearance, even make you look like another person if you use the right tools. So, maybe that's what I'll be in ten years time, a makeup artist. You'll never know where life takes you...
Thank you very much for reading my blog all about me! Hope to chat soon.

Looks Aren't Everything.

During this very interesting and informative TED Talk, Cameron Russel explains how being a model has effected her whole life. She explains how the won the 'genetic lottery' meaning she's tall, beautiful, skinny and she's an underwear model. Her looks have blessed her in a postie and negative way. She goes in-depth into a models mind and what her life-style is. The modeling industry is cruel to young girls because it effects the way they think and feel about themselves. She addresses the fact that a lot of people think models have no insecurity, have no worries and have a perfect life, but it's not true. Cameron tells the audience how none of those things are true, and how models are often times forced to be something and represent something that isn't a good thing.

This TED Talk interested me a lot because I've always been interested in how the human mind works, why society is the way it is and why people do certain things. The talk was an eye opener because I realized that I was one of those people that was stereo-typing models for what I was seeing. I understand now that models have insecurities and their lives are not perfect.
